A Few Common Kidney Stone Therapies

One of the most painful things that a human can endure is passing a kidney stone. A kidney stone forms when urine contains extra amounts of substances such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid. If your body is not able to dilute these different substances, then a kidney stone will start to form. The pain from the kidney stone is going to usually stem from the urine getting blocked in the urinary system. However, if the kidney stone is big enough, it can cause pain by simply getting stuck in the urinary system. Here are three different ways that your doctor is going to try and help you if you have developed a kidney stone.

Your Doctor Will Ask You to Drink Lots of Water

One of the most important things that your body can take in each day is water. Water is going to allow your body to dilute the different chemicals that can crystalize in your body. However, water is also a great way to try and pass a small kidney stone that has developed. Drinking a lot of water will once again dilute the urine and help push the kidney stone out of your body. Once the kidney stone is out, it is important to maintain the high intake of water. This will help you prevent any future kidney stone problems.

Your Doctor Will Use Sound Waves to Break Up the Stone

There are in fact kidney stones that can be just to painful to remove by normal means, and so doctors will actually try to break the stone up using sound waves. The sound waves can cause you some pain and discomfort, but by this time it is going to seem like no problem compared to the pain of the kidney stone. With that being said, many doctors are going to give you pain medication before this procedure. You may experience some bruising in your abdomen and kidney area. You may also notice that you have blood in your urine; this is common but should be addressed if the problem persists.

Your Doctor Will Use a Scope to Remove the Stone

If sound wave therapy has not been effective, it is possible for the doctor to go in and remove the stone. Most of the time you will be given general anesthesia for this procedure. The doctor will go in through an incision and actually remove the stone from your system. You should plan on being in the hospital for one to two days after the procedure.
